we know that jesus was born in the time of King Herod
since herod was king until the year called 4 BC hence jesus was born before 4 BC
as explained in a previous post
herod was a tyrant and according to histrical books such as "jewish war" by josephus page 121 herod massacred many cities
this matches the story in Matthew that herod massacred the babies of bethlehem matthew 2.16
then herod died and in the anarchy great battles took place
[i once met someone who accused the new testament of being a book of lies with the following claim: IF herod killed so many babies then the history books would say it"
therefore he claimed the new testament was false
as mentioned herod's massacres are recorded and we see that this poor guy was quite ignorant of historical books]
the battles did not affect jesus who had fled from herod to egypt until archelaus began ruling in the year we call 4 BC then jesus returned to "israel" matthew 2.20-22 to galilee, but not to the area ruled by archelaus by the authority of Augustus emperor. Archelaus was very cruel for his 9 year dominion page 123 [and his wife's name Glaphyra page 124]
